Paddlesports and Coastal Activities Show Significant Growth

A recent study, the Watersports Participation Survey, analyzing data from 2025, highlights a notable expansion in aquatic recreational pursuits and coastal engagements. This trend signals a growing interest in water-based activities across the population.

The survey reveals a significant uptick in paddlesports participation, which now stands at 24%, a considerable increase from 18% in 2023. This surge encompasses various activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Additionally, outdoor swimming has reached its highest recorded participation rates, underscoring a broader public inclination towards interacting with natural water environments. A key finding is that most of these activities are enjoyed close to participants' homes, utilizing local beaches, rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. Young adults, specifically those aged 16 to 34, are the most active demographic, with 82% engaging in watersports or coastal activities. The primary motivations cited for water engagement include relaxation, enjoyment, connection with nature, and spending quality time with loved ones.

While celebrating this growth, the survey also underscores the critical need for water safety. Although awareness of safety guidelines is improving, and formal training is strongly correlated with safer practices, approximately one in ten participants reported experiencing difficulties in open water. Paddle UK's CEO, Ashley Metcalfe, expressed enthusiasm for the continued growth of paddlesports, emphasizing their role in promoting health, well-being, and community engagement. Lee Pooley, Head of Safety, Learning and Development at Paddle UK, reiterated the organization's commitment to promoting safe paddling through various initiatives, including partnerships, campaigns, qualifications, and e-learning resources. With summer approaching, the demand for these activities is expected to remain high, as 80% of respondents expressed a desire for more frequent participation.

Engaging in paddlesports not only provides numerous physical and mental health benefits but also fosters a deeper appreciation for our natural waterways. By embracing safe practices and continuous learning, participants can ensure long-term enjoyment and contribute to the positive development of water-based recreational communities. This growing enthusiasm for water activities reflects a societal shift towards healthier, more active lifestyles, connecting individuals with nature and each other.
