On the morning of July 10th, Ethan Bear, accompanied by his companions Connor Dahl and Drew Kramlich, set out on the water. The trio of young anglers had launched their 19-foot Ranger boat onto a secluded lake in eastern North Dakota, eager for a productive day of fishing. Bear, a 21-year-old from Jamestown, North Dakota, skillfully employed forward-facing sonar technology to pinpoint the elusive large walleye they intended to pursue. Initially, they experienced success in shallower waters, landing several impressive fish ranging from six to nine pounds using 3/8-ounce Northland jigs baited with nose-hooked nightcrawlers. By midday, they had already secured seven substantial walleye, the smallest measuring 26 inches, all of which were carefully released back into the lake.

As the sun climbed higher and the walleye retreated to deeper sections of the lake, the anglers adapted their strategy, focusing on depths up to 20 feet. Bear, while maneuvering the boat, detected a significant fish on the sonar, positioned on a ridge 15 feet deep, surrounded by water reaching 25 feet. He cast a green jig with a six-inch nightcrawler towards the detected fish, and it struck. The ensuing battle was captured on video, revealing a fish with an astonishingly bright golden hue, a stark contrast to the typical olive-green coloration of most walleye. A wave of excitement erupted as his friends netted the catch, realizing they had landed an incredibly rare specimen. This vibrant 27-inch walleye, weighing an estimated six pounds, is thought to be a result of xanthism, a rare genetic mutation affecting scale coloration, often described as a "one in a million" occurrence for various fish species, and even more uncommon for walleye.

Despite the rarity of his catch and a fleeting consideration of keeping it, Bear ultimately decided to release the energetic golden walleye back into the lake, a moment also documented on video. He emphasized their practice of releasing large walleye to preserve the quality of their fishing grounds. Following this remarkable catch, the trio continued their fishing expedition, successfully releasing an additional five large walleye. To commemorate this extraordinary event, a taxidermist will create a replica of the golden walleye, allowing Bear to display this "one in a billion" memory in his home. Bear noted that despite years of fishing in that particular lake, he and his acquaintances had never before encountered a golden walleye, underscoring the exceptional nature of his experience. He eagerly anticipates returning to the lake, knowing that the magnificent golden walleye continues to thrive within its waters.
